State Approves Grant to Sunday Breakfast Mission
Investment Helps Non-profit Expand Services in the Community
DOVER, Del. (August 28, 2009) - Governor Jack Markell and Alan Levin, director of the Delaware
Economic Development Office, today announced the approval of a $100,000 matching grant to the
Sunday Breakfast Mission in Wilmington. Since 1893, when the Mission began its ministry in
Delaware, it has "provided rest for the body and peace for the soul" of the homeless. The state's
investment will help the Sunday Breakfast Mission to expand its services to provide shelter to
homeless women and children.
"Supporting the Sunday Breakfast Mission is part of our shared commitment to the citizens of
Delaware," said Governor Jack Markell. "The Mission provides more than housing and meals to
thousands of Delawareans. It helps lay a new foundation to build a better future."
Awarded through the Brownfield Assistance Program from the Delaware Strategic Fund, the matching
grant will be used for the redevelopment of approximately 1.64 acres located at 110 N. Poplar St. in
Wilmington. DEDO administers the program in collaboration with the Department of Natural
Resources and Environmental Control to encourage the redevelopment of environmentally distressed
sites within the state. The program offers the lesser of up to $100,000 or 50 percent of the costs
associated with the investigation and remediation of a Brownfield site.
"I am amazed by the work of the Reverend Laymon and his team," said Director Alan Levin. "The
state's investment will impact the lives of the less fortunate and help the entire community by
reintroducing people to the workforce. I can't think of a more deserving organization for this grant."

community are coming together to help those in real need," said Rev. Thomas J. Laymon, president of
the Sunday Breakfast Mission.
The new annex will house homeless women and their children. The facility will have a full kitchen,
gymnasium, doctor offices to perform medical aid, administrative offices, and on-site residences
including laundry and pay rooms for children. The Sunday Breakfast Mission will also create 20 new
full-time jobs at the redeveloped site.
