Delaware Company Granted Patent for Laboratory on Wheels
Pathologist Brings Service to Point of Care; Reduces Cost and Improves Service
DOVER, Del. (July 25, 2009) - Doctors Pathology Services, the largest anatomic pathology service in Delaware, located in Dover, was recently approved for U.S. Patent for a mobile laboratory service, announced Saturday at a celebratory event at Dover Downs Hotel & Casino.
Mobile Intraoperative Consultation Service, or MICS, is an alternative to hospital-based anatomic pathology services, traveling to ambulatory surgery centers, diagnostic imaging centers, physicians and hospitals. It is similar to the point of care service provided by clinical laboratories in physician offices and urgent care centers. However, the laboratory on wheels is built in a van the size of a typical delivery truck. MICS provides a range of medical specialties, including dermatology, urology, and gastroenterology, among others. It also allows the pathologist to consult with and market directly to physicians, as well as to meet with patients.
"Doctors Pathology Services is doing great work in Delaware," said Alan Levin, director of the Delaware Economic Development Office. "By bringing the pathology laboratory to the customer, Dr. Sukumar has improved healthcare and made it more accessible, while creating a competitive advantage for his business. Securing a U.S. Patent for his innovative and entrepreneurial service is a great accomplishment, one that will certainly position the business for continued success in the future."
Raman (Ray) Sukumar, M.D., medical director of DPS, incorporated his company in 1993. He started his mobile anatomic pathology business a few years later and also opened a private lab in 2003. DPS has grown rapidly, adding more clients and more mobile laboratory vans.
"Traditionally, when a pathologist is needed to give instant diagnosis during surgery, the patients have to be admitted to a hospital, even though it can very easily be done at a much lower cost in an ambulatory surgery center or physician's office," he said. "We realized this problem and designed MICS to carry the equipment needed in an appropriate environment. It cuts the cost of some of the surgical procedures tremendously because of being able to be done in an office or a surgery center; in addition, it provides greater convenience to the patient."
DPS started with 7 full-time employees. Today, the company employs 35 people (or 25 full-time equivalency positions), including staff physicians with the breadth of technical capabilities. DPS provides the full line of pathology services with specialties in hematopathology, cytology, dermatopathology, uropathology, and GI pathology.
